SAAA Helps to Raise Money for Liam’s League

Baseball is the greatest sport ever invented! Baseball is more then just a game. It teaches us so much throughout our lives. Throughout the years of playing baseball players develops friendships that will last them a lifetime. These friendships are stronger then most and are tested on regular bases. But when one of your fellow teammates (current or past) and/or family are in need you will always step up to help them out.

NO ONE FIGHTS CANCER ALONE!” Liam is the nephew to former Shippensburg Stars players Matt Reath and Andy Reath. He celebrated his 9th birthday on December 27. Liam was diagnosed in January 2016 with Medullobiastoma (a form of brain cancer), at the age of five, and relapsed in 2017. He has undergone several surgeries, numerous chemotherapy treatments, a stem cell transplant, and seven weeks of radiation treatment. Liam is CELEBRATING one year cancer free!

Liam’s League Golf Outing is entering into it’s third year of success. Last year’s golf outing was able to raise over $10,000, that was donated to five charities that have helped Liam in his fight against cancer. This year, they will be holding “Liam’s League Golf Outing” at Mayapple Golf Club on August 15, 2020.

Liam’s family knows firsthand, Childhood Cancer is real and “No One Fights Alone.” Liam’s League goal is to help Liam and his family financially as well as help them “pay if forward” to organizations that have helped them along the way. This year Liam would like to support Four Diamonds.

Four Diamonds does everything they can to fight Childhood Cancer. They pay all medical bills (after insurance) and cover needed supplies. They fund lifesaving research, Child Life specialists, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Counseling Services, Social Workers, and much, much more. They are an all-encompassing organization that is concerned with not just the patient but the family as well.

Many of the SAAA board members have played baseball with Matt and Andy Reath for many years on the Shippensburg Stars, it only seemed fitting to help out a fellow teammate. The SAAA has sponsored a hole in Liam’s League Golf Tournament the last two years and this year we wanted to do a little extra. We decided to dedicate our Annual Kid’s Night event to raising money for Liam. The SAAA started the night off pledging $300 and we then collected an additional $200 that night. All $500 will be donated to Liam’s League. Liam was also able to throw out the first pitch of the game. Liam might have started a new tradition for the SAAA and Stars by dedicating our Kid’s Night event to future kid’s in need.

If you wish to make contributions, please make your check payable to “Liam’s League.” Checks can be mailed to Matt Reath, c/o Liam’s League, 101 S. Queen Street, Shippensburg PA 17257.
